Blackfoot Creation Story
The Blackfoot tribe's myth begins with the creation of the earth. Old Man is sitting on top of the highest mountain. With him are all of the other animals. The people above sent a flood because an Indian child had torn apart the baby of a woman and a star. Old Man sent many animals down into the water to get some earth. First it was the Otter, then the Beaver, then the Muskrat, and finally he sent the Duck. All of the animals came up drowned in the endless water with no earth, all except the Duck. In his paw was earth. Old Man then put the earth into the water four times. On the fourth time he let it drop and the above-people sent rain to fertilize the land. Everything started to grow on the earth.
When the earth was made Old Man then took the water and mixed it with many colors, whistled into the water, and from it came the people of the earth. To one man of each color Old Man gave them corresponding cups of water and told them they were to be chiefs over the people there. Though they all spoke different languages Old Man gave them black water, which, after having been drunk, would be able to speak a common language.
