The Cherokee Tribe
"Mt. Noble" by Jeff Marley
The Cherokee tribe was once part of the Iroquoian family. They left the Iroquois and went to live in the mountain regions of the South Alleghenies. In history when gold was first found in Georgia, it was found on the outermost edge of their lands. Soon after the discovery of gold there the Cherokee community was forced to relocate and much of their land was taken from them.
Today they mostly live in Oklahoma. The Cherokee tribe is built up of seven clans. The Cherokee nation is one that has been constantly called progressive and advanced since their first encounter with the Europeans. Today there are about 20,000 living Cherokee Indians.
